Caelan Doris Included in Ireland Squad But Joe McCarthy Omitted

Rugby squad announcement update

Returning head coach the Ireland coach has included captain Doris in his Irish team for the autumn Tests, however Joe McCarthy has been excluded.

The captain, who has not played since undergoing shoulder surgery in the start of May, has come back to provincial training, but it remains unclear if he will be fit to face New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November.

Lock Joe McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot injury suffered during the opening Lions Test against the Wallabies in the summer.

Northern province forward Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province wing Calvin Nash are not included due to injury, and number 15 Keenan had already been ruled out after having a hip operation after the Lions tour.

Dublin province forward McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only uncapped member in the 34-man squad, but Irish rugby authorities says uncapped Munster pair Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped Connacht winger Shayne Bolton will head to the US as "reserves".

After facing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their previous meeting, the team host the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world champions the Springboks in Dublin.

"There's an exciting look to the squad and it's a chance for the veteran members and for the newcomers on the recent tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," commented Farrell, back to national team duties after a break to lead the British and Irish Lions to Australia.

In a mostly experienced selection, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will once again vie for the starting number 10 spot. The fly-half role is remains available, as Prendergast and Crowley poised to face off for the first time in the upcoming URC match at Croke Park.

Frawley is the third fly-half chosen with the coach deciding not to calling up the province's Byrne.

At number 9, Farrell has picked Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained Ireland to the summer Test victories over the Lelos and Portugal. There is also a return for the western province's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to teammate Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an veteran group of midfield options. Jamie Osborne is another option in the midfield, though the 23-year-old is also a frontrunner to deputise for the full-back at number 15.

Wingers Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are included. O'Brien shone on his first Ireland outings over the summer with a brace each in the wins over Georgia and the Lobos.

Paddy McCarthy is the only fresh name in the Irish pack. The front rower has started two of Leinster's URC United Rugby Championship matches this season and played in the second string's defeat by England in the English city previously.

The 22-year-old was selected in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not earn a international appearance.

Southern province lock Ahern, who received his first two caps in those matches, is retained, and experienced Ulster lock Henderson is back after sitting out the summer tour.

Conan, who played in all three Lions Tests over the summer, is set to cover for Doris should the captain fails to recover full fitness soon enough to face New Zealand.

The national team will meet in Dublin on Monday before flying to Chicago on Tuesday.
