Giants QB Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Comments
New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this week, reacting to recent criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared via social media. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."
Wilson's response pointed to the notorious bounty scandal controversy from 2009-11, when Payton led the Saints.
At that time, the NFL found that the Saints had rewarded team members for making hard hits on rival teams. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the league for one season.
What Sparked the Recent Exchange
Wilson's response came after Payton made comments after the Broncos' historic comeback victory over the Giants. The coach remarked that the team had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.
Additionally, Payton hinted that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson over Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened long after our game,'" the coach stated.
Context of the Coach-QB Relationship
- Wilson joined the Denver from Seattle in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245 million extension.
- The Broncos went 4-11 in his first season before Denver brought in Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a stint in TV commentary.
- The coach benched Wilson late into the 2023 season, a decision that ensured the quarterback from suffering an injury.
Had Wilson remained on the team by spring 2024, his $37 million pay for the following year would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was released, marking the ugly breakup between the quarterback and his mentor.
