Labuschagne Left Out from Australia's One-Day International Lineup Against Team India

The Australian selectors have left out Labuschagne from Australia's three-match ODI series against India, with high-performing Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw receiving a surprise inclusion.

Performance Issues Lead to Exclusion

Labuschagne has been omitted from the ODI team following scoring just one run in each of his two innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. He has a top score of 47 in his most recent ten ODI innings.

The batsman has featured in 68 ODIs and accumulated 1,871 runs at an batting average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now continue to press his claims a Test team comeback in time for the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.

Renshaw's Return and Team Updates

Labuschagne has shown signs of a return to form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw scored a century for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.

The left-hander may to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.

Renshaw has played 14 Tests with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also hoping for a Test return as Australia search for a fix to their batting top-order problems.

Bowling Additions and Fitness Updates

Fast bowler Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after being rested since starring for Australia in the 3-0 Test series sweep of West Indies in July.

Big Bash star Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after sustaining a head injury in the lead up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.

ODI captain Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he hopes to heal from a spinal issue in time to lead Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.

Squad Selection Strategy and Fixtures

Australia have selected a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-game T20 series due to a wrist problem suffered in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 sides after smashing a century in the final game against New Zealand to seal a 2-0 series win last week.

“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the back end of the series as players get ready for the cricket season through Sheffield Shield cricket,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the build towards the T20 World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously get ready specific players for the Test series ahead.”

Australia’s three-game ODI series against India commences on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20 internationals from 29 October.
