The Esteemed Actor Was a Ethical Force for Good, Says Watergate Exposé Reporter Bob Woodward

Bob Woodward, who was portrayed by the Legendary Actor in the 1976 investigative drama the Watergate Film, has paid tribute to the departed actor, describing him as “a noble and principled force for good”.

A Lasting Friendship

In a statement shared on digital platforms, Woodward revealed that he and Redford had been friends for half a century and that he “held him in high regard” for his friendship, his fiery independence, and his commitment to leveraging his stature to enhance global equity, fairer, and more hopeful for others.

Redford’s Role in Watergate Exposure

Woodward emphasized that Redford was instrumental in bringing to light the Watergate scandal, urging both Woodward and his reporting partner to narrate the events through the lens of their investigative experiences. This collaboration resulted in the publication of their nonfiction account the Watergate Chronicle in June 1974, which came before the president’s stepping down later that year. Redford later acquired the film adaptation rights and appeared alongside Dustin Hoffman in the acclaimed movie adaptation.

Timeless Observations

Woodward mentioned discussions held not long ago with Redford, in which the actor remarked that he had revisited All the President’s Men in 2021 and was “astonished” by how appropriate and timely it still felt, noting that “little has really changed”. Redford commented, “The Nixon era has passed, but figures like Trump have emerged”.

“We live in a country where we are unable to call ourselves the United States of America. We simply cannot. We’re the Divided States of America because of the partisan divisions and they’re deeply entrenched in their anxieties.”

A Warning About Threats to Liberty

Redford offered insight regarding the former president, after Woodward suggested that Trump was undermining democracy. “He lacks comprehension of democratic principles”, Redford observed. “So it’s easy for him to destroy it. It’s easy to destroy something you don’t understand. You can claim it doesn’t exist.”
