The French PM Steps Down Following Barely Three Weeks Amidst Extensive Backlash of Freshly Appointed Ministers

France's political turmoil has worsened after the recently appointed premier unexpectedly quit within moments of announcing a government.

Swift Exit During Government Instability

Sébastien Lecornu was the third premier in a year-long span, as the nation continued to lurch from one political crisis to another. He quit moments before his initial ministerial gathering on the start of the week. Macron accepted his resignation on the start of the day.

Strong Backlash Over New Cabinet

Lecornu had faced intense backlash from opposition politicians when he announced a new government that was largely similar since last recent ousting of his predecessor, the previous prime minister.

The proposed new government was led by President Emmanuel Macron's allies, leaving the cabinet almost unchanged.

Rival Reaction

Rival groups said France's leader had stepped back on the "significant change" with past politics that he had pledged when he assumed office from the disliked former PM, who was ousted on 9 September over a proposed budget squeeze.

Next Political Course

The uncertainty now is whether the national leader will decide to dissolve parliament and call another sudden poll.

The National Rally president, the president of the far-right leader's opposition group, said: "It's impossible to have a reestablishment of order without a new election and the parliament's termination."

He stated, "It was very clearly the president who determined this administration himself. He has failed to comprehend of the political situation we are in."

Vote Demands

The opposition movement has advocated for another vote, thinking they can increase their positions and influence in parliament.

France has gone through a time of turmoil and political crisis since the president called an inconclusive snap election last year. The parliament remains separated between the main groups: the progressive side, the nationalist group and the centre, with no absolute dominance.

Budget Deadline

A financial plan for next year must be passed within weeks, even though parliamentary groups are at loggerheads and Lecornu's tenure ended in barely three weeks.

Opposition Vote

Political groups from the left to conservative wing were to hold meetings on the start of the week to decide whether or not to support to oust Lecornu in a parliamentary motion, and it looked that the administration would fall before it had even started work. Lecornu reportedly decided to resign before he could be ousted.

Cabinet Appointments

Most of the key cabinet roles declared on the previous evening remained the unchanged, including the justice minister as legal affairs leader and the culture minister as arts department head.

The role of economy minister, which is essential as a split assembly struggles to approve a spending package, went to a Macron ally, a government partner who had previously served as business and power head at the beginning of his current leadership period.

Surprise Appointment

In a unexpected decision, a longtime Macron ally, a Macron ally who had worked as economic policy head for multiple terms of his leadership, was reappointed to government as military affairs head. This angered leaders across the political divide, who viewed it as a sign that there would be no doubt or modification of his corporate-friendly approach.
