The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Animated Journey with a Touch of Family-Friendly Preteen Romance

In this cartoon adventure aimed at tweens, the fairy community focuses on gathering teeth from slumbering youngsters and placing gold beneath where they sleep. Board-riding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about devoting his life to collecting baby teeth—a feeling that’s entirely reasonable. He is just slightly more interested in the underlying economics behind it all: the fairies hand over the molars to mysterious goblins, who supply gold as payment. But Van’s curiosity is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who proves to be far from the hideous gnome he expected.

A Forbidden Bond and Shared Threat

Everything is prepared for an adventure with a gentle touch of young love (even though it remains very much suitable for children). The goblin and fairy communities are separated from one another, and there’s nothing like the excitement of secrecy to bring people as one. Both groups as seen here are remarkably alike, yet each holds prejudiced beliefs about the opposite side. Fairies are supposed to be self-centered types, prone to taking whatever they fancy, while the goblins are reportedly dim-witted, smelly, and backward, but are actually intelligent and advanced in technology.

Of course, this scenario requires a common enemy to unite against, and that need is met by some nasty spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret about their intentions: they aim to devour the goblins and fairies, and they make for quite savage, if not particularly skilled, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts

You won’t find very many animated films targeting the viewer group that is beginning to have early romances, but are not old enough for whatever 14-year-olds are watching instead of Twilight. If your child falls into this age group, it probably won’t to be their next all-time fave, but it’s a decent choice.

A Tooth Fairy Tale arrives in movie theaters in Scotland from 10 October and the rest of the UK from 24 October.
