The Year 2026 Declared the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.

My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these amphibious creatures. Given that a collection of frogs is called an army, it seems they are launching an invasion.

A Legacy of Leaping

Frogs are not at all new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a cult following. Yet, their visibility has markedly increased in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are low-budget titles, a significant portion are serious titles centered on frogs.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To grasp this rise, I performed a detailed review into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My methodology was somewhat arbitrary, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The findings tell a compelling story: a consistent increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The amphibian's rising status in the broader culture is partially visible elsewhere, for example the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the explosion in gaming looks uniquely strong.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Frankly, this is a movement I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs offer inherent appealing traits for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as quirky characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and grappling abilities facilitate a host of innovative control schemes.

Many of the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the most significant year yet.

When these games find success—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be witnessing a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
