US President Donald Trump Issues Weekend Time Limit for Hamas to Endorse Gazan Peace Plan

Gaza Conflict
This comprehensive peace plan marks the most recent bid to end the conflict in Gaza.

The US leader Donald Trump has issued a ultimatum to the Hamas organization, calling for them to agree to a proposed ceasefire agreement for the Gaza region or else confront intense repercussions.

Via a message on his Truth Social platform on the end of the week, Trump declared that an understanding must be finalized by 6 PM EST (10 PM GMT) on the coming Sunday.

The outlined proposal calls for an immediate cessation to conflict and the release within 72 hours of twenty surviving Israeli hostages kept by the group—along with the remnants of hostages thought to be deceased—in return for many of arrested residents.

International intermediaries are understood to be encouraging Hamas for a favorable answer to the plan, but a prominent group figure has suggested that the armed group is likely to reject it.

"If this ULTIMATE settlement is not secured, severe retaliation, like no one has previously experienced, will erupt against Hamas. WE WILL ENSURE STABILITY IN THE MIDDLE EAST NO MATTER WHAT," the President wrote in the online message.

Intermediaries have made contact with the chief of Hamas's combat unit in the territory, who has indicated that he disagrees to the recent American ceasefire proposal, as per sources.

It is thought that some of Hamas's leadership in the Gulf state are receptive to agreeing to the proposal with changes—but have discovered their authority constrained as they lack command over the hostages held by the organization.

An additional hurdle for a number of in Hamas is that the proposal requires them to surrender the entirety of the detainees over the initial 72 hours of the halt—giving away their primary leverage point.

There are believed to be forty-eight detainees still being kept in the Gazan area by the militant faction, merely 20 of whom are estimated to be surviving.

Israel's army initiated a offensive in the Gaza Strip in reaction to the group's assault on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, in which roughly 1,200 people were lost their lives and 251 additional individuals were captured.

At least sixty-six thousand two hundred eighty-eight people have been fatally injured in Israel's operations in Gaza following the start, based on data from the region's group-administered health authority.
